The mission of the Academy is to serve the people of Wales by promoting excellence in nursing and healthcare through the generation, synthesis, and dissemination of nursing knowledge.

 The purposes for which the Academy is established are:

• To act as a focus in Wales for the development, evaluation and dissemination of nursing* knowledge and excellence in practice.
• To support and promote scholarship and scholarly activities related to nursing*.
• To act as an independent and expert resource on matters related to nursing* to policy makers and healthcare providers, in order to enable advances in nursing* knowledge to be translated into benefits for the people of Wales.
• To identify, and promote debate on issues relevant to the development of nursing* and its contribution to health and social care in Wales.
• To work with other nursing* organisations and all relevant stakeholders to develop the discipline of nursing* and to provide visionary leadership for nursing in Wales.
   

(*Nursing is used here to refer  equally to the three professions of nursing, midwifery and health visiting.)
